Donald Trump Asks for His Portrait in Colorado State Capitol to Be Taken Down, Calling It ‘Truly the Worst’

Trump Seeks Removal of His Portrait in Colorado

Trump Critiques His State Capitol Portrait
Former President Donald Trump has requested the removal of his portrait from the Colorado State Capitol, describing it as “truly the worst.” On March 24, 2025, he took to Truth Social to express his displeasure with the artwork, stating, “Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves…” He accused Governor Jared Polis of being responsible for the portrait, despite Polis having no role in its creation.

Artist and Fundraising Initiative
The portrait was painted by Sarah A. Boardman and financed by Colorado Republicans. In 2018, former Senate President Kevin J. Grantham initiated a GoFundMe campaign that raised $10,884 for the project. During the unveiling in 2019, Grantham commented, “Whether this portrait brings a smile or scowl to your face, remember you have the right to do so because this is the United States of America.”

Response from Governor Polis
Governor Polis, through a spokesperson, expressed surprise at learning that the President of the United States has an interest in the artwork of the Colorado State Capitol. The statement emphasized that portraits of former presidents are a traditional feature of the Capitol’s Rotunda.

Public Reactions
Reactions to the portrait are mixed. Some social media users sided with Trump, asserting, “He’s right. That looks nothing like him,” while others defended the artwork, claiming, “It’s a fine portrait. Spot on.” Boardman stood by her creation, stating, “In five, 10, 15, 20 years, he will be another president on the wall who is only historical background and he needs to look neutral.”
