DOGE Adviser Says IRS Tech Upgrade Decades Behind Schedule, Billions In Debt

Musk Advisor Highlights IRS Technological Shortcomings, Cautions Against ‘Magic Money Computers’ A technology advisor from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has brought to light significant problems within the IRS, describing its modernization efforts as “30 years behind schedule and $15 billion over budget.” In an interview with Fox News, Sam Corcos noted that the agency continues to depend on outdated mainframe systems operating on COBOL, a technology that banks have long since upgraded.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent attributed the high costs associated with contractors to a “boa constrictor” effect that hampers government efficiency. He criticized both consultants and the media for hindering necessary reforms that could reduce expenses and enhance privacy.

In a discussion with Senator Ted Cruz, Musk mentioned that 14 “magic money computers” within federal agencies create payments “out of thin air,” which could lead to budget misrepresentations amounting to trillions. He cautioned that these systems hinder lawmakers’ ability to fully grasp government spending.
