A federal judge in the US has decided to block President Donald Trump’s executive order that would end birthright citizenship.
The judge made the decision, slamming it as unconstitutional, despite many American citizens supporting the move by Trump.
The new president decided to ink a host of executive orders after arriving at the office on his first day in the White House. And this was one of them.
Sadly, it does not seem to be moving forward, at least for now after the temporary block by the federal judge.
The order comes despite a precedent from the Supreme Court that is nearly 100 years old and spoke about the right to keep birthright citizenship for those born in the country.
This also marks the first executive order by Trump to meet a major legal challenge after the start of his second term of presidency.
The US District Judge John C. Coughenour who was appointed by Ronald Reagan issued the ruling. This comes despite a poll conducted that spoke about the support of its removal while 26% of Americans said they support it strongly. On the other hand, 32% spoke about strongly opposing it.
The judge further stated how the 14th Amendment and Supreme Court case law have cemented birthright citizenship.
