Initially, another actress played Ginger in the pilot, but producers later replaced her with Tina Louise. The character was envisioned as part Marilyn Monroe, part Lucille Ball—a glamorous, flirtatious starlet. Though skeptical at first, Tina grew to appreciate the role’s charm and humor.
“I always enjoyed watching the show. Ginger was fun, and flirting is fun!” she told the New York Post.
Tina appeared in all 98 episodes of Gilligan’s Island, but unlike some of her co-stars, she never reprised the role in reunions or TV movies. Nonetheless, fans have cherished her portrayal for decades, often sending her letters of appreciation.
“I receive fan mail daily,” she said. “One woman even told me that watching the show helped her cope while her husband battled cancer.”
Despite Gilligan’s Island’s success, CBS canceled it after three seasons. Tina revealed that network executives wanted to bring back Gunsmoke, leading to the show’s unexpected end.
Life After Gilligan’s Island
Tina didn’t dwell on the past. Instead, she returned to dramatic roles. She starred in Kojak (1974), The Stepford Wives (1975), and Johnny Sue (1992) alongside Brad Pitt. Even as she aged, she remained passionate about acting, appearing in the 2014 drama Tapestry.
Beyond acting, Tina became an author. Her 1997 memoir, Sunday: A Memoir, offered insights into her life. She later wrote When I Grow Up (2007), a children’s book whose proceeds supported literacy programs. Since 1996, she has also volunteered at public schools, dedicated to inspiring young minds.
The Last Survivor of Gilligan’s Island
Over the years, Tina has outlived many of her co-stars. In 2020, Dawn Wells (who played Mary Ann) passed away from COVID-19, leaving Tina as the final surviving cast member.
“Dawn was a wonderful person,” Tina told the New York Post. “She always had a smile on her face. She was family, and family is everything.”
Life Today: Love, Legacy, and Looking Forward
Tina was married to talk show host Les Crane from 1966 to 1971, and they had a daughter, Caprice Crane, a successful screenwriter and novelist. Today, Tina enjoys spending time with her two grandchildren, whom she affectionately calls her “beautiful babies.”
At 90, she continues to live in New York’s Turtle Bay neighborhood and remains surprisingly youthful.
“Age doesn’t define you,” she said in 2021. “I don’t need a number. Just live in the moment.”
Still open to love, Tina admitted, “I’m available! I just don’t get out much these days.”
